How to Get to Cumberland BC
Click each transport option below for more details on getting to Cumberland.
-
From Vancouver: The ferry ride from Vancouver to Vancouver Island is an incredibly beautiful start to your Island experience. From the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal, catch a BC Ferries sailing to Nanaimo (Departure Bay or Duke Point). From there, it’s a scenic 1-hour drive north, leaving Highway 19 at exit 117.
From Victoria: Take Highway 1 North from Victoria, passing over the beautiful Malahat summit. At Nanaimo, continue North on Highway 19 to exit 117 for Cumberland. The drive takes just under 3 hours and offers beautiful coastal views.
For a more comprehensive experience of Vancouver Island life, deviate from Highway 1 at Cowichan Bay Road, following Highway 1A North through some of Vancouver Island's most quaint coastal communities. Highway 1A reconnects with Highway 19 at Nanaimo.
Don’t forget to stop at the Coombs Country Market to say hi to the goats on the roof!
Similarly, once past Nanaimo, exit towards Parksville and follow Highway 19A along the coast, capturing beautiful landscapes of Denman and Hornby islands, with views of the Coastal Mountains throughout.

Tips & Reminders
from your local staff
Watch for wildlife
As you adventure into the wilderness on foot or on bicycle, please be aware of the impact your presence has on wildlife behaviour. Please do not feed, approach, or touch wildlife, and be aware of sensitive ecological areas.
Book your ferry ahead of time
Reserving a spot on the ferry is highly recommended. Not only does this make for an easier travel day, taking up less time, but it will ensure that you get where you want to go. The boats can fill up fast! Look up timetables and book tickets here.
Driving? Here are our best tips
Eagles, deer, and sea life are almost guaranteed to be seen if you are driving around the Comox Valley. Please be aware of your speeds (especially at dawn/dusk) and pull safely off the road to take in these sights, so as not to impede traffic or cause risk to others.
Cell phone coverage can be spotty in many places on Vancouver Island, and in some places, non-existent. It is wise to download road maps and trail maps ahead of time to better ensure your safety as you venture further into nature.
Drive BC presents up-to-date road conditions and events, from closures to construction delays.
Check the weather
Weather systems can be very diverse, even within the Comox Valley. From alpine peaks to balmy beaches, to the cold Pacific winds - you should prepare for an array of weather as you go about your day of adventures.
Make your plans into the back country with the weather in mind - inclement weather can roll in off the Pacific Ocean quite quickly, and it is best to be prepared.
